Pharaoh and The New Star

Pharaoh and The New Star

Pharaoh and The New Star mixes choral praises and repetative text with vocal solos that advance the narration of the story of Moses' mother, Yocheved.
Lyricist: Music and Text by Sora Jederan-Shpack

Pharaoh and The New Star is a perfect stand-alone concert piece for chorus and soloists. Telling the story of the Mother of Moses from the Qur'an, the theme explores the different ways she and the Pharaoh deal with fear. The opening music of praise sounds to our western ears as in the key of F major, but for this work, it is called Makam Acem Asiran (ahjem ahshiran). This flavor quickly changes as the soprano soloist modulates to Makam Saba introducing Moses and Pharaoh. Another modulation takes us back to Acem Asiran as both choir and soloists return to complete the story and sing again the songs of praise.
